Katie Merz

Katie Merz is among the most renowned public artists and contemporary muralists in New York. Best known for large-scale murals on building exteriors and in public spaces, her work can also be seen on streets in Mexico City, Austin TX and now Charlotte NC among other smaller urban neighborhoods. Her interior murals in the same style have also been commissioned for numerous restaurants, bars, workspaces and recreation facilities across these cities. Katie also holds a Doctorate of Humane Letters and is Professor of Drawing at the Cooper Union School of Fine Art.
Born in Brooklyn, her spontaneous murals comprise densely sandwiched glyphs and words in wild orientations. They echo both traditional graffiti and the friezes of classical public buildings.

"My parents let us run wild. I grew up in Brooklyn, in the city, and we played on the streets a lot, created things, games, buildings, drawings. And in the backyard, there were bizarre things that we would make - just worlds. I realized that this free way of playing and my magical thinking was a gateway to become an artist"
